HARRY HOUDINI SIGNED STOCK CERTIFICATE Lot 403. NY. Houdini Picture Corporation, 1921, I/U Stock Certificate Signed by Harry Houdini as President. Harry Houdini was a Hungarian-American escapologist, illusionist, and stunt performer noted for his escape acts. Houdini first attracted notice in vaudeville in the United States and then as Harry "Handcuff" Houdini on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up. Soon he extended his repertoire to include chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers,c straitjackets underwater, and having to escape from and hold his breath inside a sealed milk can with water in it. As president of the Society of American Magicians, he was keen to uphold professional standards and expose fraudulent artists. He was also quick to sue anyone who imitated his escape stunts. He was also a keen aviator and became the first man to fly a powered aircraft in Australia. He eventually became one of the world's most famous, if not the most famous, magician, escape artist, and illusionist, taking on the name Harry Houdini. However, what many people don't know about Houdini is that he was also a motion picture producer, director, actor, screenwriter, and stuntman. His company was called the Houdini Picture Corporation. He died on Halloween Day, October 31, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 52. His death was caused by peritonitis resulting from a ruptured appendix. The condition may have been worsened or hastened after he was punched in the abdomen by a college student testing his famous ability to withstand punches, a punch he may not have been prepared for. His sudden death fueled rumors and speculation, but it was ultimately ruled a result of natural causes. Houdini's legacy as the greatest escape artist in history endures to this day. Lot 314. IL.
