שבשומרון. מדוע? כי ראש הישיבה הרב מלמד, אמר שאסור לחיילים דתיים לגרש יהודים

THE BRAVE RABBI AND THE AUTOCRATIC RAMATKAL



The Ramatkal (IDF Chief of Staff) has ordered the Hesder Yeshiva at Har
Bracha closed because its Rabbi, the influential Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, son
of Arutz Sheva founder Rabbi Zalman Melamed, has said many times that
soldiers must not deport Jews from their homes in the Land of Israel. This
shocking position of the Ramatkal's was reported extensively in the Hebrew
press and the following link in Haaretz also briefly mentions the
"recommendation of the IDF Chief of Staff to remove Har Bracha from the

Kindly call or write to the Chief of Staff and remind him that *at
least*two of Israel's former Chief Rabbis gave precisely the above
ruling
-- former Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren z"l and former Chief  Rabbi Avraham
Shapira z"l. Since the IDF's official website proudly states that
naturalist/vegetarian soldiers have the right to refrain from wearing
leather shoes (http://www.aka.idf.il/rights/asp/faq.asp -- in Hebrew), it is
about time that the *Israel *Defence Forces showed *at least* the same
sensitivity toward the beliefs of the mainstream Jewish Orthodox and
rightwing soldiers, because *Israel* is a *Jewish* country -- not a
vegetarian country. No religious soldier should be ordered to act contrary
to his mainstream religious beliefs, and if the Chief of Staff has been
dilatory and failed to deal with this problem, Rabbi Eliezer Melamed
deserves all possible credit for airing the subject so as to prevent
mistreatment and imprisonment of tens of thousands of religious soldiers who
may be commanded to deport Jews and will be forced to refuse.
